Cosmetic Surgery?
When you are going through a divorce, it is really common to start thinking about your appearance in a new way. This intraspective thought process often comes from the divorce itself; a new beginning means a new you. You may start thinking about the frightening prospects of joining the dating world again. I am not going to lie to you about this topic. The dating world is difficult. It was hard back in your twenties, right? The good news is dating as a person who is older, you go into it with a new attitude, or you should go into it with a new attitude. In your twenties you may have had a tendancy to be the person you thought your date wanted you to be. Don't make that mistake this time around. Be yourself. If you don't like the arts, don't pretend you love the impressionist movement. If you don't like sports, don't hang out in sports bars on Sunday's wearing your jersey.
The same holds true for your appearance. You are not going to solve your problems by making a surgical change to your appearance. I am not opposed to plastic surgery at all. The older I get, the more open I am to options to help me hold onto my youth. But, I think it is a better idea to focus on cosmetic procedures to be a better version of you instead of trying to change who you are. Here's why
1. Plastic surgery comes with a price. Literally.
Cosmetic procedures range in cost, but they are all expensive. If you are going through a divorce, you are learning to live under different financial circumstances. The cost of a lawyer is another added expense. You should be saving money to be able to live in a comfortable, new environment or be able to afford to stay living in your current home. Don't rush out and spend money on something that is not a necessity, at least not for a while. You should be in a good place before you alter your appearance. I have talked to a lot of women who had very high expectations from a procedure in how it would change their life. In almost all cases, the change they made did not live up to those expectations.
2. If you need to make a change, focus on improvement instead of change.
Are you starting to see signs of aging around your eyes or forehead? If not, the divorce process may accelereate this phenomanon! There are some great new cosmedic procedures that fill in lines, plump up cheeks and fade signs of sun damage and aging that are less expensive then surgical procedures. I will be exploring some of these in detail this year and evaluating them for cost, effectiveness and pain.
3. Weight loss through cosmedic procedure.
There are new procedures that can help "melt" fat and "remove" fat. These procedures have varying degrees of effectiveness and can be costly. I am not trying to disuade you from investigating these procedures, in fact I am advocating to do research on them. I would like people to post comments about their own experiences for others to get first hand information.
At this point, I am advocating weight loss by joining a gym and fitting an exercise routine into your lifestyle. I cannot tell you how much this can help your overall health, well-being and appearance. A bonus is making friends with others that are working on their appearance. I suggest joining a small gym or signing up for a class that is conveniently located. Find a local place and sign up for yoga, pilates or zumba. You will get a good workout and meet a new group of people. My next blog will explore what I call "The Pilates Effect".
Have a great week and feel free to post your comments. I am anxious to hear about your cosmetic surgery experiences!
